How we can help your child

Are you concerned about your child's reading progress?

Parents trust that the school will let them know if there is a problem with their child's reading progress. However, the 'wait and see' approach still prevails, and often by the time your child is far enough behind that the problem is brought to your attention, so much precious intervention time has been lost and your child is already showing the signs of the social-emotional impacts of being significantly behind their peers. Early intervention is the most powerful tool we have at our disposal if we are to lessen the achievement gap.

Parents are often the first to raise concerns when they notice the tell-tale signs of reading difficulties, such as realising that their child is using the pictures or context to guess words, or that they are cleverly appearing to read through memorising predictive texts, yet do not know the words out of context. As a parent, you are aware of the effort that went into learning those sight words, the ones that were forgotten the very next week after the next list came home. These difficulties can often be quite unexpected, particularly when you know that your child is very smart and creative - perhaps even an out of the box thinker, and the difficulty your child is experiencing with reading and spelling just does not make sense.

Some kids seem to take to reading like a duck to water, however, a large proportion of students do not intuit letter-sound associations and will require explicit instruction if they are to crack the code of written language.

Early identification of reading difficulties is important."

DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT

Untitled design-4

Our office based in Camira, QLD with Zoom sessions available also

The first step in getting your child the help they need is for us to conduct the diagnostic assessment to determine the underlying issues which may be causing reading difficulties. This screening process only takes just over an hour to determine if there are deficits in areas of letter-sound knowledge and phonemic awareness difficulties around the blending and segmenting of sounds. This enables us to let you know if there is indeed a problem, and if so, to provide you with an in-depth understanding of exactly where your child’s reading and spelling is falling apart and what you can do about it.

Don’t delay getting your child screened if your instincts tell you something is wrong – the longer reading difficulties are left unattended to, the further the gap widens between their peers and the social-emotional issues of reading frustration and avoidance start to kick in! Early intervention, through an evidence-based, systematic synthetic phonics approach, is the best tool we have at our disposal to bridge the learning gap and get your child on the path to reading success.

ASSESSMENT COST

Our screening assessment provides a cost effective option in determining if your child has a reading difficulty/disability

Formal assessments through an educational psychologist start at around $1200. Whereas our screening assessment (which includes a follow up phone call to discuss findings) is only $140.

Our assessment is by no means a formal diagnosis for Dyslexia or reading difficulties, however it does provide extensive information on where reading is falling apart for for your child and if there is any cause for concern.

NEXT STEPS

Following the diagnostic assessment we will discuss with you our findings and provide suggestions for steps forward.

If it is determined that your child does require one on one reading intervention we will assess our current availability as our spots are limited and you may need to be placed on a waiting list.

We have recently expanded our capacity to take on new students, however these spots will fill up fast!

Louisa Moats Rocketship

This is just one explanation for the Science of Reading

Dr Louisa C. Moats

The body of work referred to as the "science of reading" is not an ideology, a philosophy, a political agenda, a one-size fits all approach, a program of instruction, nor a specific component of instruction. It is the emerging consensus from many related disciplines, based on literally thousands of studies, supported by hundreds of millions research dollars, conducted across the world in many languages. These studies have revealed a great deal about how we learn to read, what goes wrong when student's don't learn, and what kind of instruction is most likely to work the best for most students.
